Is that just a disaster?

We're running oracle 8 on a win2000 machine, and the database *literally*
keeps disappearing. Not only that, but the backups aren't any good either,
which makes no sense to me. (i'm just the CF girl, I know nothing about the
rest of it)..

However, I thought I'd ask if there were any known problems with mixing and
matching any of these in an application.

Essentially, we keep getting "Oracle Instance Terminated" errors randomly
when a cf page interacts with the database. The last time, it was a simple
select query, selecting the password out of the user table when the user id
was #whatever#. It's worked a billion times, there is absolutely no reason
it wouldn't work out of the blue from the CF side of things. I looked in
the CF logs to see what kind of error happened before the oracle instance
terminated, and got the following:

"Error","TID=1020","12/12/00","10:20:45","...","Mozilla/4.0 (compatible;
MSIE 5.0; Windows 95; DigExt)","ODBC Error Code = S1000 (General
error)<P><P> [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure
<P><P>SQL = "select password from ... where ... =8911"<P><p>The error
occurred while processing an element with a general identifier of (CFQUERY),
occupying document position (13:3) to (13:48) in the template file
.....</p><P><P>Date/Time: 12/12/00 10:20:45<BR>Browser: Mozilla/4.0
(compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 95; DigExt)<BR>Remote Address: ... <BR>HTTP
Referer: ... "

Six seconds later the oracle instance terminated error occurred. Since then,
we had no luck connecting to oracle, no luck restoring the backup, and are
in the process of rebuilding the &$#^*$& database.

Does anyone have any ideas what this means, why it happened, why it keeps
happening (the oracle instance termination is a recurring theme on this
server), etc..?

TIA for all your help,

Katie
