Can you give me a site you had good luck with?

I've tried bidding before and you're absolutely right, it's just not a market 
for folks like me.  I'd make more with a night job bagging groceries :)

I am more interested in the steps needed to do it outside of recruiters.  I'd 
like to advertise locally and understand how to properly determine the size of 
a retainer, how much folks typically secure up front, etc.
