Looks like the problem here was related to Flash - we've got an "on site" IM client that was built with Flash, and of course it only shows up when you're logged in, which is why none of you saw the problem. And it only affected people with Flash on Safari 5.0.1 on Mac!
Still not sure what the root cause is, but at least we're a little closer and the guy who built our IM client can maybe figure it out.
