I've been using CF with DB2/400 for quite a few years now.  We are very happy
with both performance and stability.  Here are some of the things we have found:

   We use Client Access Express for the ODBC connection.  We had been using the
   regular (older version) for a while, but there was a huge performance issue
   with multiple processors and multi-threaded applications such as CF.
   Use stored procedures wherever possible
   Look into using vector indexes.  For more information, see IBM's web site.
   With vector indexes, we were able to cut our query times as much as 10 fold
   on queries against some of our larger record sets (26million + rows).
