I just had a very strange experience. My CF server was chewing up major cpu
slowing down the entire site and since I know the traffic at this time
should not warrant the major resource usage I did some digging to find out
why it was acting up and here is what I found.
I stopped ALL web services so there shouldbe zero traffic to cf and cf still
takes up 50% of the cpu. Hmmmm...I restarted CF several times and it still
chews up 50% cpu usage. The only thing that CF could be doing is processing
the queued mail in the c:\cfusion\mail\spool folder. Sure enough there were
2293 messages in queue but after several refreshes of the folder I noticed
CF is not processing any mail since the number of messages remained the
same. Fine. It's stuck. So I went to the command prompt and did a del *.* to
the spool folder and out comes an error: "Cannot process file since it's
currently be used by another process".
Turns out there is this single cfmail message in the spool folder and upon
opening it I found that it was completedly empty. The conclusion is that CF
somehow spewed out an empty cfmail message by mistake and the internal mail
processor subsequently bulked on the empty message. Removed the message and
CF is now back to normal.
Happy Holidays!
