I love it when the answer turns out to be something really basic - especially 
after I've spent hours trying to figure it out.

Turns out that the GIF file must not be valid.  I've just started working on a 
Mac and a colleague suggested that if I need a test graphic just make one using 
Preview.  Well, I can now see that any GIF file I save in Preview throws the 
error but any GIF files from our artists make do not throw the error.

They are using Photoshop and I - for the first time - do not have Photoshop 
installed on my machine.  Thus, the use of Preview.  I would have never thought 
that Preview says save as GIF but doesn't - exactly.

So, thanks that was a big help.
