It sounds like you have some specific things (long running reports, "heavy lifting" scheduled pages) which might be candidates for (a) handling outside of CF, or (b) optimization. As for whether it's less expensive, only you and your server admins can answer that with certainty. Nothing is ever free - presumably, your admins are rationing resources in order to share among all the servers.
