I know, but when using gmail, you see the whole threaded conversation not individual emails, so when hit reply at the end you reply to the last post. that is a negative of course for the reason you stated, but the positive is you do at least tend to read the whole thread before before replying, which avoids you giving the same answer that 10 other people have already given, which is a problem for folks who read the emails individually.
