MySQL, or one of the NoSQL variants, though I am still investigating. 
Twitter's DB solution offers a lot of promise, but it is only designed 
to handle <= 30% of what I am looking for and is still beta.

I have been ignoring SQL Server in favor of open source alternatives, 
but I will give it another look.  Thanks!
