I've got a 3 gig heap and these settings on a similarly spec'ed box - no 
claim whether they're ideal or not.

-server -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:MaxPermSize=512m 
-XX:+UseParallelGC -Xbatch -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=600000 
-Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=600000
