Great comment!
As a ColdFusion developer, and having used Macromedia products (for over 10
years) and worked with some of their engineers, I saw the opportunity for a
merger since July of 1999. When the news was announced yesterday, my first
reaction was: Finally!
I have faith in both companies in developing and integrating their best
products. I don't think Macromedia merged with Allaire solely for
ColdFusion, but more for their long-term vision of moving to the J2EE
platform (Neo, Trinity/JRun/JSP/Kawa and Pharaoh).
As was mentioned at the Allaire Developers Conference, ColdFusion is not
going away any time soon, but will be built to run on the Java platform.
Diversified platform support is important for Macromedia, and Allaire has
the tools and assets to do just that.
Dreamweaver UltraDev, although with some limitations, is one of the coolest
programs to quickly put together dynamic web sites. The current state of CF
support in UltraDev is not as extensive when compared to ASP, but hopefully
this merger would change that situation.
Flash, on the other hand, is pretty much the standard multimedia player of
the web. Combining CF and Flash (or Director/Shockwave) is already very
powerful, and is great for many types of sites (such as entertainment and
media). I'm sure Harpoon and the future integration of these two products
will further benefit us - the developers.
Personalization is another area which I feel we'll see more of, in terms of
integrating into tools like UltraDev.
I wouldn't be surprised to see CF/JRun Studio, Kawa, and UltraDev rolled
into one. The question is, what Macromedia is going to do about porting
these programs to the Mac (as UltraDev and most other Macromedia products
are cross-platform). Will Macromedia acquire BBEdit (the Mac editor of
choice), or will these programs run on the Java platform eventually like the
server apps? Interesting times ahead...
