CF Jobs thread regarding, (WOT) Consulting [Su,Ro]cks Consulting. First. What the heck does that mean anyway? It is almost as nondescript as say ... ecommerce. - Second. Consulting Rocks. - Third. It's not for everyone. - Fourth. Why not me? I want it so bahhhdd. Commentary. I think self directed, how am I going to make my money today is both scary and exciting. The discipline and focus to create and maintain a normalized income level is tough. Especially if, your attracted to consulting, because you want to be self-directed. I mean I want to kick over rocks, experiment, learn and have fun. So I have created a few "learning" projects, not to generate opportunities or money, but to learn, and create a useful framework for my life and future "learning" projects and passions. There may be a light at the end of the tunnel ($0.30 CPM heh heh), or maybe not. I could see making money to be kind of, euphoric. Forget to take holidays (can't afford to), and work long hours. I remember my first job building fences, I used to try and carry as many boards as I could, build as fast as I could (at times), because I needed that personal feedback in a competitive sense from my work. Set (ok attempt, but its easier than it might seem, because nobody else plays the "game".) legendary benchmarks. And I could see consulting have that side to it. I made $3200.00 today! Flew into xTown, solved Y problem, in z hours at $240 per hr (plus expenses), blah blah blah. But I need a pay cheque. Keep the whine machine at home a little quieter, my wife is a simple woman with modest wants and needs, she just likes things to be stable. I have a tendency to thrive in (ok drawn to) chaotic environments, to the point where I need a little chaos to keep focused. Pitch. Why not consult? Because I have a personal agenda I want to fulfill. Can you consult and still meet your agenda? Yes, but it would require specialization, and a little bit of money to ride the storm. hmmm. What is perfect for you? Normalized income through business relationships with long term contracts. Leading edge tools (playgrounds). knowledgable mentoring (access to smarts). A little chaos. Focus on ideas (innovation). Break the Rules. Not bottom line focused. Balanced lifestyle. Lifestyle focused work. Empowerment. Accountability. Vision. Failure part of successes (as in you need to fail to succeed). So what does this mean? Tell me where I am wrong, or where my pitch fall apart. I am thinking of consulting as an innovation company. Clients don't pick me because they want innovation. It just doesn't work that way. I use companies to create innovation playgrounds, and play. Let the businessmen pick through the ideas and make the money. The idea is to push technology, ideas, models. I'm not interested in making heaps of money, just a normalized income, some added social responsibility (hire people, earn a little extra money), and playing. with technology and ideas. I want to create a technology playground to play with lifestyle enhancing ideas. The ideal playground would include Internet connected kiosks, high speed networking, VPN, application server, member based Internet development, voice technologies (Wreck a beach, VXML), WML, content aggregation and syndication, digital print, interactive media. Applications would be developed for community - lifestyle. = ?? Anyone want to give me 10% of their development budget, to create an innovation playground, gteed to be more productive than traditional methods. ie we will produce more code, and kick over more rocks than the other 90% of your budget. But we won't worry about scale, platforms, or bottomline either. Just do cool stuff. Example: Create an application platform to manage a distributed CO-OP production and warehousing system. ie Mary makes the JAM. Billy bought and sliced the pig. Distributed suppliers and warehousers, single catalog, inventory, and logistics system. Arena score clocks that are internet logged. Hockey leagues, can then use the Arena score clock to capture full stats, and parse through standard logs to populate databases. Not that far of a reach. I am confident we could piece together a program to place Internet kiosks at every community club that wanted one. Branded, advertising pushing, application serving(otherwise called the Internet), kiosks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox.
