You trim the output, not the tag. Where ever you have your code outputting the 
variable, trim it.

I don't think you can trim a tag:
#trim(<cf_MyCustomTag>)#
I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Besides, this is still a
workaround. I posted my own solution (which I discovered after my
original post).
