I had a similar question about custom loggers...

I was in part more interested in the SQL syntax to make nice reports, 
do totals, etc. based off of many many entries that lay in the 
database... (since I am not a SQL guru)

the reason why people need custom logging may not be apparent..

Here are some scenarios from my world:

1. Test the inter page particulars (startup, shutdown, queries, etc.);
2. Offer click through user session tracking in long term to help 
customer support see what a user was doing when an error occurred; and
3. IIS (v3/4) doesn't support all the advanced logging parameters 
supported in the flat log feature...
