Check out the qForms API:

It'll make what you're trying to do very easy. As a matter of fact, if you
want to know the value of the field, just do:
obj.fieldName.getValue();
No need to trap the value, just call the getValue() method. You can also set
the value using the setValue() method. There are examples online.
