I ask you what other datatype I should use for a boolean value 1 or 0.
Is it just the int datatype?
I take it that this would be the simplest means of sorting out the
problems.

Why do you need the GROUP BY clause at all?
I don't see any aggregate functions (COUNT, SUM etc)
Also, which column is a bit column and does it really need to be?
