The company I work for deals with print/web catalogs and the only answer we
came up with is to write some form of disk-based application to create your
print catalog.  This is because when you print, you're using the browser to
interact with the printer and not your page.  With a disk-based product you
can provide a direct "to print" model.  We have a set of applications that
is designed to do this using CF/SQL Server on the web side and a FoxPro
application for the disk-based portion.  It's worked for several years with
improvements and updates made along the way.
