Yes, it is. Capitalism is just that, capitalizing on the market or lack of
competition, as in Standard Oil, etc.
>From webster.com
: an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of
capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and
by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined
mainly by competition in a free market.
Regulated Capitalism is what we in America are (generally) used to. Our
government, through regulation, limits what can happen, as in anti-trust, no
monopolies, etc. Look at the profits of the telecom and media companies,
they are Natural Monopoly's. They capitalize on this fact and use it to
their advantage. There are limits on what you can do. If you think the oil
and energy companies are not charging more because they are nice guys, you
are mistaken. They will (and often do) charge as much as they can, when they
can. Economically, it often makes since to charge less, over more people.
Not that I am against capitalism, I have been practicing it for most of my
life. I just think we need to understand it.
As this country increasingly deals with growing unemployment we as "the
people" should ask, Why do companies have to continue to 'grow' at double
digit speeds, etc. and then bam, they turn around and 'streamline', laying
off huge numbers of people. Each time a company 'grows' or acquires another
company, thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of people loose their jobs.
To wit Exxon/Mobil, Compaq/DEC and probably HP/Compaq.
Ask yourself, who is hurt when these companies higher so many only to have
massive layoffs or when companies merge, only to lay off half the work force
from one or the other companies?
Call it what you will, THIEVERY, GOUGING, etc. It is still CAPITALIZING on a
situation.
..and I agree, we should move this to CFCommunity.
