In a sense, what DCOM was supposed to be. You call remote URL's, invoking methods and properties, and get something back. Everything is sent over HTTP; the data going back and forth is XML. For the most part, SOAP and web services are pretty synonymous. Pretty cool; hopefully it's past the infancy (buzzword) stage. If you wanna down and dirty with the spec: http://www.w3.org/2000/xp/
