Yes, this is the currently the way it works. Index and Create with VDK, search with K2. (Note: The collections are available for searching in Both the VDK and K2 Modes!!! The Custom1 and Custom2 Fields are available to the K2 Server. I haven't tried doing this myself but they should be searchable just like any other field. Since you are indexing using the VDK mode tags and such, the custom1/custom2 fields should be available and populated. Give it a shot! I'd like to know what your results are.
