Folks:

Okay, I just have to jump in here. I was in the "Adult Products and
Entertainment" industry not too long ago.

I firmly believe that many of the eCommerce techniques and technologies
(credit card processing, customer relationship management, advertising,
etc.) in practice today did originate in the Adult Entertainment Industry.
Heck, we pioneered just about every aspect of eCommerce (shopping carts,
pay-per-view, subscription services, etc.)

To this day, the single most successful industry on the web is *Adult
Content*. Period. Always has and always will be. (Now whether this is the
"way it should be" is a moral topic we should take up elsewhere.)

I would say that all of these techniques would have been developed over
time. I would also say that the rate of development of said technologies is
credited to the Adult Industry. We really HAD no choice - the dice has been
rolled elsewhere... We responded to what Web users wanted, and we gave them
just that! The results have become today's "Best Practices".

Just my 2 cents!
