Subject: Substring function in query

When I construct the following SQL statment, I get an undefined function
error. I'm trying to extract the first letter of the Botanical_Name colu
mn
(full text string) and create an alias column (of A, B, C, D, etc). What am
I doing wrong?

SELECT f_ID, Common_Name, Botanical_Name, SUBSTRING(Botanical_Name,
1,1) AS
Alpha1
FROM p_FloralContent
ORDER BY Botanical_Name ASC

Thanks,
Mark
