Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers as to creating a
simple real-time client connection report.

Basically, I want to be able to report use of web enabled kiosks in a
managed LAN environment, in real time.

At its simplest the scenario is thus:
Lets say we have 4 kiosks dotted around the premises, each being served a
specific website from a remote central web farm via VPN connection. There is
a fifth terminal which is being served a backend administration web site for
the content of the kiosks and public web sites etc of the client. What I
wish to do is integrate a simple web page within the administration site
which would give real-time indication of the usage status of each of the
four kiosks on the premises. This could be as simple as a narrow frame with
four little kiosk icons which change between red and green depending upon
active/inactive state of the kiosks, where active state would be when a
"joe-public" is browsing the site on the kiosk.

Of course I would love to be able to extrapolate the information reported so
as to include current page viewing, visit history etc etc.

As the kiosks will be on a LAN with (presumably) fixed IP's and most
certainly uniquely identifiable via the VPN connection credentials, I'm
presuming I could gather and record client information at the web server
end. My problem now is how do I push this information to the fifth
"management" terminal? I'm thinking perhaps having a meta-refresh page in
the frameset which reads kiosk status data from a database table, but this
wouldn't be truly real-time - although I'm sure a 15 second refresh interval
may suffice for most clients needs.

I'm aware that there are several tools readily available to network admins
etc which do just this task, however my needs are for creating a very simple
and easy to understand reporting engine for use by sales-people. Basically I
want the sales person to be able to see what a walk-in customer is looking
at in the kiosks, without having to peer over their shoulder, then to be
better equipped to close a sale when they eventually approach the customer.

TIA,
Dave
