Couple of points- I've seen applications that were built for the sole reason that a developer wanted to show off their abilities. Something that is useful and fits the requirements. Then they can say, "this is one thing that I have done in CF, it is used on x sites world-wide!" Okay, so it's free, but it *is* used by many sites. Artists call it "making a dummy"... they build up a complete work to send to publishers or prospective clients that showcases abilities. Also, on the comment that "hardly anyone reads" the community list... why do I have almost 8500 emails from that list in my folder? Cheers!
