My 2 cents..... It can also be a useful marketing tool. You give it away.....don't have to support it because it's free....plaster "powered by Your Company" all over it.
There is a company up North here that created a whack load of "webtools" which are things like: -add a poll to your site -add a subscription mailing list -add a calendar -etc They gave them a way for free and targeted webmasters and ISPs. There was enough traffic they could sell advertising on their site. Then the big company came in and bought their 2 person operation for $2,000,000 CDN!!
