Doug, I think that the tools and components available to us all are a considerable asset, rather than the reverse. Our respective projects can benefit considerably from re-using pre-built components, regardless of who wrote them. Same goes for full-blown apps.
A good part of the motivation for giving a lot of stuff away myself is that I got (and still get) a lot of free help from others myself. If those folks were to have charged me for their expertise I'd be a lot less better off than i am, and so would my clients' sites. Thus I'd like to be able to contribute something useful back as part of the community that benefits us all. A previous poster mentioned how much contact he gets from other developers re: customization for $$$, and I have the same experience. I've earned more than a little picking up projects from other developers who got my name from a tag I authored. Personally I'm happy to take a pre-built component like FuseTalk and plug it in to a client project at my cost plus a few bucks for my install time... less work for me, client gets a good product and I have more time to get my own coding done, which is where the real money is at. --Matt-- -----Original Message----- From: Douglas Brown [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2002 2:18 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: OT: Just wanna bitch I know this is not the place for this, but I just have to ask this question of the community. What is the benefit of developing a commercial grade application and then giving that application away for free? I see message boards out there where people have obviously spent hours and hours of development time and effort, just to turn around and give the thing away. Is this type of mentality not hurting the development community? I understand that a message board is not that huge of a deal, but some people are trying to make a living developing such items. Is it not more beneficial to design a product and sale it for the going rate of such an application? I am eager to hear what everyones thoughts are on this subject. I would have posted to the community list, but hardly anyone really reads it.
