Ye Microsoft say all that but then proceed to say, if you do want to do it then here's the precautions you need to take. We've done it with Excel and it's been running for over a year now. Can't remember the exact page but look up automation on the Microsoft site. The main things are you have to install it under the same account as you're running CF, and that shouldn't be the system account, and you can select run unattended (can't exactly remember where). The safest bet is also to run it single threaded, otherwise different processes can run into each other and then they can hang. We did this via the db we were calling but I reckon you could use CFLOCK around the call. Good luck. -----Original Message----- From: Peter Theobald [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 21 February 2002 16:06 To: CF-Talk Subject: Creating PowerPoint files on the CF Server?
I need to take a bunch of individual PowerPoint slides (or images) and merge them into ONE PowerPoint presentation ON THE SERVER then download this to the user. Microsoft has clearly stated that PowerPoint (and all the Office apps) are NOT intended to be used as server components. They are not robust, not multi-user, and do things like pop up dialog boxes for the user, which on a server would cause PowerPoint to halt forever. Does anyone know of a CFX, CFOBJECT, Java Servlet, or any other tool that will let me work with PPT files on the server WITHOUT using a running consumer copy of PowerPoint on the server?
