http://www.cfcomet.com has info on using cfobject to generate and manipulate office documents. cffile (write/append) just creates a plain-text file; you'll get a notification from office 2000+ to install components (specifically it wants to install file-type converters for the 'unknown' plain-text format) if you have a plain-text file named with a .doc extension.
