The SDK includes Java Plug-in and Swing classes to save you from downloading them.
The JREs (the actual runtime environment) is the same and it is all you need to run applications and applets. If Java Plug-in or Swing is called for and the browser supports it (IE), it is automatically downloaded. It can't hurt to install the SDK. It just takes more room. In the end, the only thing that CF cares about is the path to jvm.dll or jvm.so for Unix/Linux. The rest is for the developer.
