Are you thinking then of trying to match a layer up with a Table. Possibly using the div or layer tag?
That will be a pretty formidable task. Especially if you are dealing with cross browser compatibility. If you dynamically generate the color of the td cell ("bgcolor" or better yet through css), you can just place an image inside the td as well. What the client is now looking for is to add another layer on top of this with certain symbols. Say exam date or finish of term date.
