Ian, NT and win2k OS come with a a backup program that allows an administrator to schedule backups to tape. It's cheap and easy - but it has limitations, one of which is that it will NOT backup locked files. Sys admins who want to protect critical data usually install a 3rd party backup software (of which there are many) that run in conjunction with an agent installed on the machine - usually as a service. This agent allows the backup of locked files and it can even capture them in a consistent state (usually). It sounds like your ISP doesn't want to pay the price for consistent backup - putting the burden on you.

They are locked, but should still be copy-able. Some versions of Access allow you to set over security so that the file is "shareable" ie it can be read by more than one user, or "Exclusive" so that when locked it is locked to reads by others. By default all databases are shareable. We back up many Access databases here with no difficulty, but we do straight copies to another machine and backup from there. Some database backup applications actually read the database rather than just copy the file. If that is the case in this hosting firm then the file will be locked by CF and not be accessible. -- Yours, Kym ______________________________________________________________________ Your ad could be here.
