Dick, I am not using MX on Linux (yet), however, I did come across this note in the release notes (the very last point in the Other Known Issues section). Maybe this is your problem? "On Unix, you cannot use the sample aplications that use the Pointbase databases when security is enabled (Sandbox Security in the Enterprise edition, Resource Security in the Professinal edition). You must disable security on Unix to use the Pointbase sample data sources." If that's not it, sorry I can't be of more help.
