I just started exploring Java myself (learned how to spell it yesterday :-).
I looked around and got:

Beginning Java 2 SDK 1.4 Edition
by Ivor Horton
Paperback - 1100 pages (March 2002)
Wrox Press
ISBN: 1861005695

O'Reilly is also releasing a new edition of an old classic (you know, I am
an O'Reilly evangelist):

Learning Java
by Pat Niemeyer, Jonathan B. Knudsen
Paperback - 700 pages (June 2002)
O'Reilly
ISBN: 0596002858

You may want to check other sources for opinions/reviews since I am not in a
position to judge anything about Java :-)
