And the fact that you mention that the files can be edited directly,
tells me that you have never worked in a true production environment. By
this I mean that it is not a good idea to make changes to any website
while it is live, this gives the user the false feeling that the site is
not ever finished. Not to mention that while you are working out the
bugs the user also gets to see the errors and can be put of big time
with this.

Never a good idea to make changes to a live site until you are 100% sure
the site is ready to go live!!

I've seen it done to convert a site to CF without the necessity of
duplicating all the files. The files can be edited directly and CFML
added
as needed.  It is also done as a way to implement obscurity - to sheild
users from seeing what technology is being used.
