The only way I know of to eliminate it accross all users ( without having to have them turn off their OS defined sounds, etc. ) is to use either a Flash module for the page that needs to refresh ( and collect new data from the page using the new Flash MX loadvars object ) , or to dynamically alter the content of the page that needs to be refreshed using something like the activeServer component of FusionScript ( www.fusionscript.com ) -- actually what either of these solutions will do is eliminate the need for the page to refresh. I have a small chat feature in my cms which uses a Flash MX movie to do this -- let me know if you're interrested and I'll email the cfm, swf and fla files to you for reference.
