We just got the newest version of IMAIL here to replace our old crap
we're using now. Haven't implemented it yet though but seems like a good
program. But we only got the up to 250 users license since were a small
business.

I was curious, what version of IMail were you using.

Version 7.1 states "
Support and Scalability
The sky's the limit with IMail Server. You don't have to worry about
your
mail system expanding beyond its capacity with IMail Server's
market-leading
scalability and performance.

IMail delivers greater performance than proprietary mail systems,
offering
scalability to over 100,000 accounts on a single server
Support for more than a million messages a day
IMail supports an unlimited number of user accounts
You can set up "peer" servers to allow several servers to share the load
of
a single domain - an economical and redundant way to host hundreds of
thousands of mail accounts "

Do not get me wrong, I do not always believe what I read, but it seems
you
are within thier capabilities. Another question, do you have anything
else
running on your server?

I am asking these questions as I am looking to find an alternate
solution to
Exchange. So far this one seemed the most likely candidate. Your help
is
appreciated.

Thanks.

Mike

We bought IMail here, and we ended up killing the server in about a
week. I think it is great for small business but with any real load it
dies. We played with it for about a month until we decided to go ahead
and move to exchange. Always knew Exchange was better, but we were
looking for something for our clients and did not want to go through the
trouble of setting up a DC just to run Exchange, even though that is
what we ended up doing. We are also talking out IMail taking in about
1,000 msgs a minute, so we are pretty hard on our servers. If you have
the money, I would suggest Exchange since you have over 20,000 users and
I am not sure if it will run like you are wanting it as well. We were
running it on a Dual 2.1 GHz Xeon, 8 gigs ecc 2600 registered ram,
15,000 rpm RAID 0 SCSI drives and still could not keep up. I would
suggest using the trial for the month to make sure it works for you
because we are still trying to get our money back.

Mike,

I'm taking a look at IPSwitch's IMail server
http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/messaging.html which uses an ODBC back
end
for domain/account info. Since we're in the early stages of the project,
don't have a lot of useful info to pass on, but IPSwitch is pretty solid
and
the specs look great on paper, plus there's an option to buy anti-virus
for
the mail server if that's a plus for you. Price is reasonable by our
standards ($2500 for unlimited users with support contract) but we're
replacing a Netscape Messaging Server/LDAP combo that's costing
$1.50/head
for 20,000+ users. Replacing $30,000 software and CFLDAP with $2500 and
CFQUERY sounds pretty good right now :)
