Not that a good check as some versions of software demand lower (and higher) versions of the MDAC components. You can download COMCheck from Microsoft : just search from the Homepage and you can find out what version you are running.
It does pay to have the latest software installed, but in cases of MDAC I have seen wayward results with certain installs.
