In XHTML, tags like <br> and <img> DO NEED an end tag.  However, they can
"be their own" end tag, i.e. <br />, which is equivalent to <br></br>.

BTW, Dave knows what he's talking about.  In fact, I think he was inventing
XML around the same time that Gore was inventing the Internet. ;)
