I was messing with that a while ago, and I realized that there isn't a clear way to be told if it's a valid email address unless you actually send an email to the user and have a portion on their end to finish registration. Some email servers give an error and say that there isn't a user and some won't. The only sure way is to have that user answer a question or follow a link through the mail.
