Yep, that would achieve the same as my query, but the problem still exists with getting the value out at the other end. Which should be solved by referring to it as #qContacts["First name"]#

<CFQUERY name="qContacts">
    SELECT firstName AS  [First Name]
    FROM contacts
</CFQUERY>

Doesnt SQLServer allow you to use square brackets too?    If you accidentally put a space in Ent Mgr while you're building tables it'll put square brackets around the name .. for example:
 
SELECT [First name], lastname  from  users
