Thanks for all suggestions.

A different developer who shall remain nameless was filtering the image 
directory on a blank "" string, returning everything, hence the really really 
long wait time.

The problem did not reside in the PutImage tag.

We were talking about about any number of images (up to perhaps 50).

How many images are we talking about here, you can embed the image in the
report if its only a few and then use some script logic to then decide which
imgae to display.
