David, I spent several weeks (maybe even months) during the last part of last year to get vspider to work on SuSE Linux with no success. I think I had about 5-6 engineers from Macromedia (before the merger)/Adobe (after the merger) assigned to the case and had me test various settings, updates, etc. but nothing worked. The final state where we gave up the vspinder had stopped crashing all the time, but it gave inconsistent results (if I ran it 2 times in a row on a static set of pages it resulted in a different sets of indexed documents)
However, I had an interesting discussion during WebDU with an engineer from Adobe and he suggested that the vspider is not locked down to localhost, but locked down to one and only one IP (which you define during install) and you should be able to spider you SuSE site from Windows machine (since vspider works just fine on Windows). We never got around to actually trying that, but it might be an option for you to try out Best of luck and let me know how it goes.
