Drew, are you running on CF7, by chance? If so, there is a new getsoapresponse() function that may help. I don't know for sure, but it's worth checking out.
Beyond that, you may also want to look into the underlying Apache Axis project upon which CF's (and BD's) web service interaction is actually based.
