Chris,
I did't post this to my blog, and as such Railo has been around for awhile granted. however you still need to hand over money for a decent version. IgniteFusion haven't heard of before, but it is not open source.
I think the benefits of support to the Smith Engine is simple, if they get enough support it will be a total open source Coldfusion engine and I think that makes more of a difference than anything else.
Now although it would be nice to see that happen, I think Adobe does have something up its sleeves but we'll just have to wait and see.

And of course there's also IgniteFusion (http://www.ignitefusion.com/ )
If any of these free and/or open coldfusion servers gives Adobe
sleepless nights, we'll problably see a free version from Adobe.
