I promised myself I wouldn't be drawn into this conversation again, but I can't let this slip by, mostly because it reminds me somewhat of this daily WTF: http://thedailywtf.com/forums/thread/79265.aspx If you have to resort to swindling either clients or your own management by telling them that a product with a higher major version number is better, more mature or more stable, then you're short on real argument. PHP's version numbering CLEARLY follows a different scheme, based on point releases. If you want to fool someone who doesn't know the difference, at least compare "Coldfusion 8" to "PHP 5". Don't go mentioning this 5.2 business or he might realise the caveat! If I have my Google skills and my history right, the first version of Cold Fusion was released in 1995, developed primarily by one individual (JJ Allaire). Approximately 12 months PRIOR to this, the first version of "Personal Home Page Tools" (PHP) was released, developed primarily by one individual (Danish-Canadian programmer Rasmus Lerdorf). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coldfusion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PHP > PHP has a larger market share, the points are valid. > > Ask him who writes and supports PHP. > > Then tell him > > Adobe writes and supports CF. Why don't you ask him who writes and supports CF, just to see if his answer is any different to the PHP question? As mentioned in a previous thread, commercial support contracts for PHP are available. The most well-known example is through Zend. http://www.zend.com/products/zend_core/support As with my previous dipping of toes into this argument, I'll happily concede that their are arguments and business cases for many, many options of which PHP and CF are just two, and both come with their compromises. It's just that neither of the arguments presented here stand up to facts. Both do, however, play on common misconceptions surrounding PHP. -T --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "cfaussie" group.
