The page refresh does seem a little slower in IE6 than FF, but from here I
can't compare it with compression turned off :)

I'd say it is fairly 'normal' to use http compression. I think most sites
would. Keep in mind you're compressing the HTTP response, not the .cfm file
as such.

I have seen a few issues with compression and IE. I recall some problems
with PDF's and some versions of IE. Just exclude certain folders or file
types as required.
