My personal answer is as below:

- SOTR is a small, friendly, community conference really being worth 
attending
- I'm in Europe in June and July anyway to see friends and family
- I had to tick off Scotland on my list of countries to visit...and 
was discussing this with Andy Allan already before we moved to NZ :)

Cf.objective look interesting as well, but one can't go to every
conference - as you've mentioned. Additionally extensive air travel 
to and within the US is currently not really my personal fav. 
pastime, so I try to go over there about once a year for MAX.
