As far as I can remember JConsole will just run on Java5+. That being said you should be able to run it on a Java 5 JVM and hook it remotely to inspect an app on 1.4 - I'm pretty sure though that you'd be limited in which information you can get.
There's also a knowledgebase article somewhere on Adobe.com how to create a thread dump.
