This reply is probably a little long......
Because - if the policy is to NOT allow POP3 access - and you are NOT the
SysAdmin that makes the decisions (and hence can't turn it on) - then you
won't be able to use it.
In any larger organisation you are always going to have to have workarounds
(unless you own the company).
Just consider what happens when a Cold Fusion hosting company doesn't allow
Custom Tags to be uploaded - you have to use CFMODULE instead (or CFIMPORT
if they are running CFMX) - you generally can't get them to do it for you
just because you promise you won't do whatever it is they are scared you
will do.
I have worked in Cold Fusion jobs where the policy was "no CFX tags without
source code" - and most people don't want to give you their C/C++ source
code - so we never ran them.
I personally won't agree to purchase or run anything that uses CF encrypted
tags on any site I am responsible for - because if I am going to use
something and be responsibel for it I want the right to be able to change
it if I need to. �If I didn't want that right then I might as well buy some
C/C++ application that would probably perform the job faster and more
efficiently.
Just the same with Exchange or Notes. �Sometimes you are just not going to
get the functionality enabled because of policy reasons.
Another example, we run IIS here - but all ASP scripting is disabled for
security reasons. �This is not negotiable. �I could change it if I wanted
to - but the policy has been set. �Not that it is a problem overall - but
it is when there is a Third Party product that someone is keen on running
and it only comes in an ASP flavour.
It's all workarounds and comprimises.
