Maybe some browsers recognise the .com / .org .net, .co, etc domains as exceptions... dunno, don't really care either. Just curious.

No, you can't do that. You can set domain cookies for the 2nd level domain if there is no country domain (eg. xyz.com), but if there is a country domain, you can only set domain cookies for the 3rd level domain (eg. xyz.com.au).
